Experience

I received my bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Colorado Boulder. I began tutoring math as a sophomore in high school in courses ranging from Elementary Algebra through AP Calculus BC and Calculus 3. As an undergraduate, I was a Calculus 2 Learning Assistant (LA) and I tutored at the Math Academic Resource Center (MARC). While I was an LA, I took a math and science education course in which I learned about effective educational methods and pedagogical theories. As a tutor at the MARC, I helped students in a wide variety of courses: anything from Quantitative Reasoning to upper-division math courses. Since graduating, I have tutored both privately and for tutoring companies, including BuffTutor and Varsity Tutors. As of Fall 2023, I have tutored a combined total of over 1355 hours for over 80 different students.

Outside of tutoring, I was part of the Visualizing Number Theory project through the math department at CU Boulder. I received two 4-year merit-based scholarships, and in my senior year, I received the Massaro and Pratto Scholarship in Mathematics. I am also a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon math honor society and the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. I graduated from CU Boulder in 2018 with Distinction.

I attended UC Davis for graduate school between 2020 and 2023. I gained extensive teaching experience both as a Teaching Assistant (21ABC) and as an Associate Instructor (16A, 21B) while in the PhD program. I also received the Henry L. Alder Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2022.

Reviews

Sharon is the best math tutor I could have ever found. I’ve always struggled with math on my own, but every tutoring session with Sharon boosted my confidence in my understanding of the material. Sharon explains things clearly and thoroughly with helpful steps that professors tend to skip or rush through during lectures. Sharon has the ability to simplify concepts and teach them in different ways, so you can find the strategy that works best for you. She is patient, kind, empathetic, and flexible. I always felt comfortable to tell her that I didn’t know or understand something that I should have. She is happy to work with you slowly and re-explain things that you struggle on. She is not only an amazing tutor but she is also a wonderful and fun person in general. Sharon truly cares about you and your success in the course. I seriously would not have passed my classes without her. Sharon has made a huge impact on my education, and I highly recommend her as a tutor!

Sharon is an excellent tutor. I got a lot out of the added accountability of having a tutor, where deadlines are sparse, but the course requires a lot of practice. She was really great at pinpointing my needs. She was really great at re-explaining and clarifying things in a way that connected and felt valuable to me. I always came away from her sessions with a much stronger intuition of the material.

Sharon is certainly a very skilled teacher, but maybe more importantly, she really seems to care about the outcome. Sharon is really accommodating, patient, and easy to work with.

Sharon’s pricing is excellent considering the preparation she puts in and what one gets out of it. I had a hard time justifying paying for additional instruction at first as a financially independent (broke) student. It was worth it. It made getting through the course less stressful and overwhelming. It let me maintain a high GPA which will afford me access to scholarships, grants, and admission in the future. In hindsight, EASILY worth it.

MAT 021C: A
MAT 022A: Didn’t hire her for tutoring until the back half of the course. Did very poorly at the beginning: 70.5% on first midterm. Sharon helped me bring it up to an A-. I got 104% on the Final Exam!!!”

Sharon is an exceptional tutor! She is patient and thorough in her explanations. During each session, she provides a clear set of notes that we work through together, which I can later use for reference. Sharon takes the time to explain each concept in detail and always checks for understanding before moving on. Her thoughtful, step-by-step approach was a large factor in my success with upper-division math. I often feel confused in fast-paced math classes, so having a resource where I can ask questions in a slower-paced environment is incredibly helpful to my learning. I highly recommend Sharon to anyone in need of a tutor!

Sharon was the absolute best! Genuinely she is the reason I was able to get through MAT17. Math has always been my weakness, but Sharon’s style of teaching makes daunting and difficult concepts more approachable and easier to understand. Whenever I didn’t understand a concept she was always prepared to show it another way to make sure that it made sense to me. Sharon makes herself as available as possible, which is super helpful with unpredictable college schedules. I wish Sharon tutored more than math because I would use her for every subject possible. Highly recommend!

Sharon was amazing. I was really struggling with calculus, and she was great at breaking it down step by step and explaining it in a way that in made sense. She was super patient and never got frustrated or annoyed at the (lots of) things I didn’t know. She helped me figure out ways to remember which formulas to use, and her notes were super clear and color coded! She carried me through my calculus class and I wouldn’t have passed without her.

Sharon is an excellent tutor in all regards. I struggle immensely with math, even understanding concepts that may seem basic to others, but Sharon was able to explain topics in remarkably clear and concise ways which helped me to succeed in the classes I took. She is incredibly flexible with learning techniques and always open to exploring new ways to convey information. It was stunning to have someone explain math to me and to actually understand it, something that I had very rarely experienced before. I had never tried private tutoring for math or other specific subjects before working with Sharon, and I can quite confidently say she was the best choice out of all of my options. I’m very grateful to have worked with her and would strongly recommend her to anyone who is looking into receiving tutoring.

Without Sharon’s help, I would have still been struggling to pass my calculus courses. I do not have the strongest foundation in calculus and struggled with learning and grasping the concepts. That being said, Sharon was extremely patient in helping me understand and retain the information, and I always felt reassured and never judged for what I did and didn’t know. Sharon made any concept or problem that wasn’t clear to me very easy to understand, which helped me carry that knowledge into the exams. The last time I felt confident with math was in high school but I truly found math fun again after working with Sharon. Sharon is by far the best tutor you could have.
